Project Location: Central Maryland and Pennsylvania

Project Date: Ongoing

Members of the Monocacy Archeological Society have been working with professional archeologists for years to study the rhyolite outcroppings in Frederick County and Pennsylvania.  While rhyolite was found in boulder fields on South Mountain northwest of Frederick, the rhyolite that is found on South Mountain in Pennsylvania was mined from below the ground.  These ongoing studies are revealing important information on how the material was being accessed and utilized throughout the region.
